Stage 1

Define the right yacht

Before reviewing listings or arranging viewings, I help the buyer establish how the yacht must work in real ownership.

Cruising plans, family use, guests, privacy, crew, operating complexity and financial tolerance are brought together into a clear ownership brief.

A good yacht is not necessarily the right yacht

The market is full of impressive yachts. The more difficult question is whether a particular yacht suits the buyer, their family and the way they intend to use it.

Without a clear brief, the search can quickly become shaped by appearance, availability and individual listings. Stage 1 creates a practical basis for judging each yacht consistently before significant time, travel or emotional momentum is committed.

What we establish

Intended use
Where the yacht will cruise, how often it will be used and what a normal day onboard should look like.

People onboard
Family, guests, privacy, accessibility and accommodation requirements.

Operation and crew
How the yacht will be run, the buyer’s desired level of involvement and the complexity they are comfortable carrying.

Range and cruising pattern
Typical passages, preferred destinations, berthing, anchoring and regional limitations.

Ownership tolerance
Purchase budget, first-year work, operating costs and the level of financial uncertainty the buyer considers acceptable.

Priorities and trade-offs
Which requirements are essential, which are desirable and where compromise is realistic.

Assessing potential yachts

From attractive listings to credible candidates

Once the brief is clear, potential yachts can be tested against it.

I review the information available, identify areas requiring further investigation and help distinguish between yachts that deserve closer attention and those that are unlikely to fit the intended ownership experience.

This does not replace a broker, surveyor or technical specialist. It helps ensure their time is eventually applied to the right candidates.

What the buyer leaves with
A clearer basis for the search

By the end of Stage 1, the buyer should have:

  • a defined ownership brief;

  • clear priorities and acceptable trade-offs;

  • a practical framework for assessing yachts;

  • an initial review of potential candidates or an existing shortlist;

  • a clearer view of what should happen next.
