Three years later, will this yacht still fit our lives?
Before buying a yacht, most people will naturally look at the obvious things.
They will consider the price, the age, the specification, the number of cabins, the condition, the crew arrangement, the running costs and the places they hope to take her. All of that matters. But there is another question that is worth asking before the excitement of a purchase begins to take over.
If I owned this yacht for three years, what would I wish I had noticed before buying?
It is a simple question, but it can change the way you look at a yacht.
You may start noticing the practical details that are easy to overlook during a viewing. Whether the guest cabins really work for the people who will use them. Whether the tender arrangement will become frustrating. Whether there is enough storage for longer trips. Whether the layout gives the owner enough privacy. Whether the crew spaces are practical enough to support good service and a happy crew. Whether the yacht suits the places you genuinely want to cruise, rather than simply looking good tied up in a marina.
You may also start asking more honest questions about your own plans. Will you really use the yacht in the way you imagine today? Will you want larger groups on board in two years’ time? Will the children still want to travel with you? Will you become more adventurous with your cruising, or will the yacht mainly be used for weekends and short holidays? Will you enjoy being involved in the operation, or would you prefer something more straightforward to manage?
None of these questions are negative. They are simply the difference between buying for the first impression and buying for the ownership experience.
A yacht purchase should still be exciting. It should still feel personal, enjoyable and aspirational. But the best decisions are usually made when excitement is balanced with a little distance and a willingness to look beyond the first season.
The yacht you are buying today should not just suit the person you are now.
